At the Global Dairy Innovation Summit in this year, the leading of liquid packaging company Sidel proposed that the liquid dairy industry convert existing packaging into PET. In an interview, Naima Boutroy, Sidel's head of global packaging technology, shared with you the market strategy, cost-effectiveness, flexible production, and the response of liquid dairy companies.
According to Sidel's estimates, the consumption of PET packaging materials for liquid dairy products will continue to grow, and it is expected to reach 14.9 billion by 2020, compared with 13.7 billion in 2018, the growth rate will reach 9%. Over the past 10 years, the consumption of PET has increased steadily. For all bottled sizes, the composite annual growth rate during 2011-2018 is 5.8%, and the growth will be more obvious in the next few years. Geographically speaking, European manufacturers are leading this trend.
At present, this packaging change is under way, and the successful cases of Sidel and its partners, Erie, Juaaara and etrale del Latte, also show that liquid dairy companies have seen the opportunity to convert to PET packaging.
PET is recyclable and reusable, thus reducing the consumption of non-renewable resources. As the most widely used recyclable plastics in the world, PET is one of the preferred packaging options for sustainable development by promoting recycling rate and improving recycling methods.
